We’ve always known Love Marie Ongapauco-Escudero as Heart Evangelista, the name she carries to mark a flourishing showbiz career that spans 17 years. Today, the multi-talented celebrity continuously expands her artistic clout as she arrays a passion that fuels her successes.
“When I was discovered for commercials, it was a big yes because I was always into arts. I would draw on walls, sing or cry in front of the mirror. My mom was all about me getting into the business, my dad wasn’t. I remember secretly going to auditions,” Heart recalled. Upon joining ABSCBN’s Talent Center in 1999, she was among the talents that Mr. M handpicked to join Star Magic. “He asked me to say my name and sing a song. I sang Eternal Flame,” she mused.
It was the way she carried herself, the way she dressed, what she described as maarte and kikay, that branded a persona that served her an advantage. “Star Magic packaged me for who I am. They didn’t change me. They molded me, pieced me together, and packaged me off,” she said. She proved her range from being a VJ and host, with her acting roles leaving a mark like in Hiram, where she was nominated for Star Awards’ Best Actress.
Preparation was at the heart of her workshops, recalling how she started as a bit player in a show with Jericho Rosales. Her only line was “yes.” Star Magic’s training are the learnings she always go back to as she handles multiple endorsements and manages her public persona, more so now that she’s married to a government official. Ultimately, she felt that upon embarking on her own journey, she was more than ready because of Star Magic. “[They] are family, like parents. From my love life, to personal life, to acting, they are there. And I will always be grateful. I will never forget that,” she continued.
And in the years of honing her craft, she has embraced her other passions with much gusto. From her philanthropic works to her visual arts, she puts her entire heart into every project. The accomplished painter has sold out from her solo exhibitions and her artworks can be seen in luxury merchandise. “Painting helps me express myself further. It is who I am now, and I am confident with what I’ve become,” she added.
With the heights she’s reached, Heart continues to stay grounded, not forgetting to always thank Star Magic for where she is now. “I am thankful that I’m still part of the family. I am ‘Heart’ because of Star Magic.”
