Millions stood witness to an epic win of varying proportions. From the long awaited victory for our country to the controversial mishap of the evening, Pia Wurtzbach's unique journey to the crown, one that's been surrounded by extraordinary circumstances, earns her the title as the most popular winner in all of Miss Universe's history. Even after two years from winning, her name is as relevant as it was then, perhaps even more, with her steady trajectory to worldwide fame. The face of countless international endorsements and causes, and coming back to her roots in acting, the road Pia continues to tread is one that’s meant to inspire anybody the world over.
Enduring bullies and her parents’ separation, moving from Cagayan de Oro to Manila, working in the UK, and joining three Binibining Pilipinas competitions before winning Miss Universe Philippines 2015, and later Miss Universe 2015, paint a life’s picture faced with both challenges and successes. But fate has its ways.
At 12 years old, driving around Quezon City in search of a place for singing lessons, an open casting call in ABS-CBN caught her attention and she joined immediately. The training and workshops she underwent with Star Magic later proved to be just what she needed to endure the tests ahead. Despite no inclination to acting, she learned to love it, sharing, “If it wasn't for Star Magic, I would have never loved acting.” She was a staple in the shows K2BU, ASAP, Your Song, Bora, and Sa Piling Mo.
Even if she had to relinquish her contract with Star Magic upon entering Binibining Pilipinas, she always found a family in them. “Star Magic was very [supportive] in a way that they let me pursue my dreams outside of the Philippines. Without Star Magic, I wouldn't have known that this industry is where I need to be. [What I’ve learned] proved to be very useful during my journey towards Miss Universe.”
Quoted after her triumph urging others that they can and will succeed through hard work, Pia is the epitome of the saying ‘dreams come true for those who dare to believe in themselves.’ And she gives her thanks to Star Magic. “Ive learnt that Star Magic isn't just a platform, but an extended family. Not only have they taught me skills that benefit me in this industry, they also care for me and help guide my path in life.”
