A small crowd of press flocked to a corner of the studio, rushing to an artist preparing for the Star Magic book shoot. “Thank you, thank you so much!” said the amiable yet commanding voice, facing the cameras while holding a bouquet and an award. It was Dimples Romana, with her second child sitting on her lap, receiving the PEP.ph Teleserye Supporting Actress Of The Year Award. “Go out and chase your dream, even if you’re a mom! That doesn’t mean your world has to stop, it only means that you get more inspired because there are more people counting on you,” she told them as she encouraged other mothers like her.
Motherhood, what many women in the same position fear can end or slow down their career, became Dimples’ drive to further succeed. It’s the very challenge she shared her career as a young woman faced. Armed with determination and optimism, Dimples used her real life role to define an advocacy for fellow moms. 20 years in the industry with nominations left and right, including winning Gawad Tanglaw Awards’ Best Performance By An Actress in 2013, she continues to excel beyond expectations. She has Star Magic to thank for that.
“Star Magic really helped me as a person. They love me for me. They support what you want to do and help you discover yourself. And we all go through tough times. I got pregnant and I married. I thought it will affect my career. But it helped me know myself. I had to adjust into being a mom and wife while very young. Despite that, [Star Magic] banked on how I was as an actress and as a person in the industry,” she related. She entered showbiz at only 12 years old as a way to help her family. The eldest daughter took it upon herself to assist with her sister’s leukaemia, who passed away a year before she was launched. Without any inclination to acting, she went ahead anyway. “[Entering showbiz] was circumstantial. I joined for my family. And that’s a great motivation, diba? Family makes you do things. They make you love deeper and stronger… Later on, I learned to love my job.”
Barely into her teens, she was casted as Paola in the primetime drama Esperanza where she played a 22 year old. The role helped cement her versatility and range in the industry. Exposed to veterans and directors at a time where teleseryes were booming, she developed receptiveness, which she carries to this day. “Be a student, all the time. Ganun ang kinalakihan ko.”
With Star Magic’s training and workshops, it was easy to grow a career based on a path she personally wanted. “Back then I didn’t know what I wanted to do. But Star Magic noticed something in me that I didn’t know myself. They are able to gauge what you can be good at. Sometimes I found [the jobs] to be very challenging for me. But then Star Magic thought that I can pull it off. If they believe in me, than I should believe in myself too. I have to evolve with every role. It’s sometimes scary, but that’s what I like about fear. Fear lets you explore yourself more. Fear is a strong emotion, and it helps get you into character. It changes you.”
Hosting was among those fears. Adding the method she’s been wanting to try to the varying roles she’s mastered playing, she plunged into training with Star Magic’s support. Since then, she’s been the face of Promil Preschool i-Shine for 6 years.
Dimples exemplifies the reality of the saying ‘opportunities come to those who are prepared.’ As she remains steady, strong, and influential after decades in the industry, she shared, “Be open to different kinds of education. I don’t count how many scenes I have but the mark I can leave in every scene. And you need to care in this business. Important and pakikisama and professionalism.”
