Intimidation is a double edged sword. It can chasten the spirits or it can prove one’s mettle. In Desiree Del Valle’s case, she has always mirrored the latter. She takes her experiences as learnings and uses them to further a career that now spans 21 years.
Her foray into the industry was met with just that, when an actress her senior tested her grit. “Hindi ako nag pa intimidate and ginalingan ko nalang. Hirap maging bago. Hindi ka dapat mag inarte. It’s hard work. If you don’t like it then get out.” Her launch with Star Magic’s batch 7 stirred up controversy when news broke of her discourtesy to veteran actress Jaclyn Jose. “I don’t remember seeing her at the press con talaga. Nag lakas loob ako and I went up to her. I was really saying sorry. She said ‘Wala saakin yun!’ I was happy that I had the chance to apologize. Nag pakapal na ko ng mukha,” she related. Desiree’s spunk and determination are the reasons why she continues to succeed.
Mr. M first saw her in Star newspaper’s ‘Face of the Week’ and invited her to join Star Circle 7. She captivated as a fairy in Wansapanataym. She moved on to become one of the original cast of an astonishingly popular youth-oriented Filipino drama series Tabing-Ilog. The show is still regarded as part of Philippine pop culture until today.
After working in the US to help her family, she came back to star in another hit show. Her character in Bituin opened doors for more kontra bida roles that are so menacing, people believe it. “Some people would slap my arm and tell me, ‘Ikaw talaga!’ Akala nila totoo,” she laughed.
Playing alongside pros like Nora Aunor, Tetchie Agbayani, Cherie Gil and Caridad Sanchez, she took all her roles with honor. “Who gets that chance diba? Gagalingan mo talaga. It’s a new thing to learn. If you want to sustain your career, you have to think your last stint is your very last. If you mess that up, tatatak yan.”
Desiree also relates her other secrets to last in the industry — treating people right and keeping your feet on the ground — aspects she learned from working with Star Magic. “I am really thankful sa Star Magic, iba talaga. Inaalagaan nila ako. They have always been there for me even during the hardest times,” she ended.
