Maricar Reyes Poon slowly walked to the set, nursing a sprained ankle. Yet with every pained step, the perceptible reticence she came in with sloughed off, merging with the elegance her silver white gown and make-up insinuated. She was in her element, her eyes piercing through the camera lenses as she performed her years-long mastered skills.

Maricar’s first affair with the camera started way back she entered showbiz, gracing commercials here and in Southeast Asia while she was finishing her medical studies. She captivated many, shown in websites and blogs from the early millennium detailing their fascination with the model. Mr. M was equally charmed after seeing her in a fast food commercial.

“I was asked [by Star Magic] to come in and try out. I took 3 months of workshops, and after that small roles were lined up, like in teleseryes,” Maricar related. Her first role was in 2008 as Gloria Sevilla’s younger character in Komiks Presents: Kapitan Boom and just a year later, she won Best New Female TV Personality from PMPC Star Awards for Television for her performance in Precious Hearts Romances Presents: Bud Brothers. In 2011, she bagged the accolade for Cinema One Originals Film Festival Award’s Best Actress for her character in the indie film Anatomiya ng Korapsyon. She learned the ropes quick despite the transition from commercials to TV challenged with work hours and demands. “I learned to make pakisama, to conduct myself right in public. In showbiz, your production assistant today can be your executive producer tomorrow, so you must learn to work well with everyone. This kind of work is not forever,” she said. Star Magic, she shared, nurtures her well as a talent and makes her feel right at home. It’s family.

Maricar’s hard work, professionalism, and down-to-earth demeanor are a reflection of her fortitude that saw her through a controversy, which came with her first ventures in the industry. Admittedly a private person, the issue was one of the biggest challenges she faced, but with Star Magic’s guidance, “I was taught how to handle it well. They gave me the directions and I just had to follow it. They were always on my side,” she said.

She also appreciates how Star Magic has always been honest and supportive of her career. “Mr. M was straight with me. He really knows the track of our careers. He predicted [my prime] to be within 5 to 10 years. True enough, almost 10 years after, my one foot is in showbiz and the other is in business with my husband. I want to be successful in business, but I also want to do quality roles. My heart tugs to acting parin,” she shared.

The doctor who passed the medical licensure exam in 2008 now found another passion in baking for Choco Liquor Cakes by Maricar. With husband Richard Poon whom she married in 2013, the thriving venture helps with keeping the marriage alive. “We time” is important to the couple, and being each other’s priorities, they make it a point to be together most of the time. They share their stories as husband and wife in the blog www.relationshipmatters.ph, a candid look into the thoughts and lives of the Poons.

Soon after the shoot, Maricar genuinely thanked the team and dressed back to her sports clothes, all too soon returning to her modest self. To still be so grounded after all these years can be a contrast to the face that has become a symbol of beauty for so many brands, to the characters of comeliness she portrayed. But to remain herself yet be confident of her expertise are the reasons that make her genuinely captivating inside and out; reflection of what she has and continuously learns from the industries she thrives in.
